I’m continuing my crafting kick this week, but this time I’m busy making decor for my apartment because WELL… I just love staying busy and changing stuff up around my place. My focus these days has been our restroom, it’s been an area that was lacking color and personality. I decided to combine my love for all things bohemian and all things blush and blue. I DIYed a bar towel rack, and whipped up a small yet colorful painting but it still needed something else I knew I wanted to in cooperate a mirror and a little more color, Que the Boho wall Hangings (I have a restroom “reveal” coming soon hence what these are not shown in their new homes, stay tuned).

They were very simple to make, this is the  type of craft you can do while binge watching Girl Boss or whatever show you are currently hooked on. Now on to the tutorial.

20170516043555_IMG_1803-01.jpeg

For this DIY you will need:

20170516050603_IMG_1808-01.jpeg

Step one:

I started by cutting 42, 6″ strips of Blush yarn, 11, 6″ strips of  Pale Taupe yarn and 1, 20″ strip of Navy yarn, set a side for now.

20170516044033_IMG_1806-01.jpeg

Step two:

I then placed a piece of tape just below the middle of the mirror, I used this as a guide to glue down the yarn.

*Crafters note: I recommend using washi tape, or a tape that is not overly sticky.

20170516044316_IMG_1807-01.jpeg

Step three: (optional)

I wanted to add a boarder to the mirror, to give it more substance, so I place a slightly smaller bowl over the mirror leaving me with the perfect amount to create a border. With a small brush I painted along the edge, this made the mirror really pop  (I’m obsessed with this stuff!).

*crafters note, I once you lift the tape there will be a small gap left go back in with your brush and carefully fill it in.

If the gilding liquid bleeds, take a Q-tip and a small amount of nail polish remover to fix any mistakes.

20170516050738_IMG_1809-02.jpeg

Step Four:

I found the vertical center of my mirror and laid down a generous amount of Mod Podge placing 11 Pale Taupe strips, in the center, and 21 Blush strips on either side. As I added more I made sure to place them closely together and made sure they were straight. Set aside and allow to dry (20 mins to work with, but 24hr to full dry)

*Crafters note: start from the center and work your way out this will ensure everything is symmetrical.

20170516052206_IMG_1810-01.jpeg

Step five:

With the same small bush I painted one of my three dowel caps, leaving the other two untouched. Set aside allow to dry.

*Crafters note: I slid a brush handle through a dowel cap, this allowed me to rotate the cap while I painted it.

20170516053100_IMG_1813-01.jpeg

Step 6:

To hang the “beads” I took my Navy strip and folded it in half, leaving me with 2, 10″ strips. I knotted the bottom portion 3 times and slid the first bead through both strips about 1″ from the bottom. I then made a second knot 2″ above the first one, and slid my second bead, and finally I made my last knot another 2″ above the second one and slid the last bead.

20170516053418_IMG_1814-01.jpeg

Step seven:

To create a tassel, I simply looped the Navy yarn 20 times around the palm of my hand, I then took a 6″ string and tied it through the center of the loop.

20170516053509_IMG_1815-01.jpeg

Step eight:

I then snipped the bottom of the loop, creating several separate strands.

20170516054024_IMG_1817-01.jpeg

Step nine:

To attach the tassel, I simply tied the loose strands through the loop and cut off the access.

20170516054601_IMG_1819-01.jpeg

Step ten:

After the glue was dry enough, I took the mirror and laid it flat separating each of the strands I then taped all the yarn down with a second piece of washi tape. This will keep everything in place.

20170516054726_IMG_1821-01.jpeg

Step eleven:

To achieve a nice uniform round shape I took a bowl slightly larger than the mirror and placed it 5″ below the bottom of the mirror. Holding it firmly I then began to cut along side the bowl.

20170516055320_IMG_1823-01.jpeg

Step Twelve:

The last step is to glue everything down with a generous amount of glue, and allow to dry over night before hanging.

The end result is so chic, I love these in multiples to make a statement.

DIY Mothers Day Gift Idea Minimal Ring Holder

20170510145648_IMG_1711-01

With Mothers Day right around the corner, some of us might be scrambling to find the right gift for those special mamma’s in our life. Well don’t worry, I got you! I have a super Chic, Modern and EASY jewelry holder ( you only need 30 mins!) perfect for the minimal mom.

I bought all of my supplies from Micheal’s Craft Store, with coupons and store promotions everything came in under $20.00 SOOOO affordable. ( Also I ended up using added a small marble dish, also from Micheal’s)

20170503012752_IMG_1479-01-01.jpeg

For this DIY you will need:

20170503021448_IMG_1498-01-01.jpeg

Step one:

I Start by adding a VERY thin and EVEN layer of the liquid gilding with a small foam brush. I Allowed the liquid gilging to fully dry before adding the next layer (I did three) be sure to shake well before each use. Also this stuff has a strong scent, work in a well ventilated area.

20170503023833_IMG_1499-01-01.jpeg

Step two:

I wanted to create an ombre effect, so I stared by added blue paint to 5 mixing  bowls then added a small amount of white paint until I reached my desired color ( this is optional, you can paint your cones all the same shade). Set aside and allow to dry.

20170506015220_IMG_1581-01-01.jpeg

Step three:

Once everything was fully dried, I played around with placement until I was happy. I used a ruler and pencil to make a guide, creating two straight rows going from dark to light and placing the jewelry dish on the far left.

20170506020500_IMG_1582-01-01

Once I was happy with the placement, I added a small amount of E600 still using my ruler as a guide. I allowed the glue to dry (24hr) and that’s it!

I hope you guys enjoy this DIY, If anyone recreates it be sure to tag @lifeinmauve and use the #lifeinmauvediy. I have a few more DIY’s to share so make sure to check back tomorrow.

How to Thrift like a Pro

20170409041236_IMG_0833-01

Ever since launching life in mauve I’ve been on a constant hunt, for new gems to style and create content with.  Since my pocket-book isn’t endless, I’ve been spending my free time rummaging through strangers unwanted possessions at thrift stores, flea markets, and yard sales (the struggle is real!). I have to say, it’s been really fun, and I’ve found some awesome unique things along the way and I thought I would share my thrifting process (yes it’s a full blown process).

My favorite (or most successful ) seasons to thrift are spring and summer, around this time most us are doing spring cleaning and looking to declutter, and refreshen our homes. Thrift stores are packed and yard sales are popping up everywhere full of undiscovered treasures. I encourage you all to spend a weekend or afternoon checking out your local thrift store and see what gems you can find.

20170407040113_IMG_0768-01

  • know what you’re looking for: Think of specific styles, shapes, and intended purpose
  • Shop the entire store or sale: This is probably my number one tip for finding all the gems, rummaging takes time, be sure to look through every section because things get misplaced all day long.
  • Bring a friend: I have an awesome thrifting buddy who also happens to be my cousin, Randy, we know each others style so while shopping for ourselves we also keep and eye out for each other.
  • Think creatively: Color can always be changed, items can multi-purpose as long as it has good bones I say go for it and take on a small project.20170427041844_IMG_1229-01
  • Look out for discounts: Most thrift stores offer half off certain color tags, or sales on certain departments. Be sure to ask an employee.
  • Set a budget: It’s very easy to get carried away in the excitement of low prices, try to bring a set amount of cash.
  • Shop in departments: Yard sales and thrift store can feel overwhelming, so I recommend to shop one area at a time this helps me stay focused as I make my way around.

20170427041049_IMG_1223-01

  • Double Check everything: Make sure to test lamps, sit on furniture, inspect the  backside, and underneath to make sure there is no hidden damage.
  • Avoid Stains and cracks: Be realistic of what can and can not be fixed, in my experience stains are nearly impossible to remove and cracks tend to be too time consuming. Just say no!
  • Yard sales over Thrift stores: Yard sales tend to have lower prices, usually items at yard sales are priced to go, which means people are more willing to bargain with you.
  • Bargain: Bargaining can be hard, what amount is appropriate whats not? I usually offer $5 dollars less knowing most people will go down by $3.
  • Review: Lastly right before paying I review the items in my cart and make sure I have purpose for everything.

  1. Think creativly: Items can always be repurpesed, colors can always be changed, as long as something has good bones and works for my intended purpose I give it a shot.
  2. Set a budget:The rush of thrifting paired with the low prices can suck you in, even $2.00 adds up don’t spend more than you tended.
  3. Keep an eye on the employee doors: New merchandise is stocked through-out the day, employees will roll racks and carts out, and allow you to shop directly from them. You can get your hands on all the new and fresh items.
  4. Bring a friend: Two set of eyes are better than one! I have a really good thrifting buddy, my cousin Randy, we know eachothers style and keep and eye out for each other. A buddy will also keep you from making bad impulse buys.
  5. Don’t buy anything with stains: IF fresh stains are hard enough to get out, old stains are even harder. Just say no.
  6. Know your abilities: I’ve found myself regretting buys because I’ve taken on more than I am capable of.
  7. Double check everything: make sure you plug lamps in, sit on furniture, check the back side and underneath.
  8. Ask about Discounts: Look for signage that shows what type of discounts are currently going on, most thrift stores have a weekly color that is half off.
  9. Browse the entire store: This is probably my number one tip! Thrifting takes time, comb through every section don’t assume all chairs are held together, customers tend to leave things in random places.
  10. Bring hand sanitizer: things can get sticky at times so I like to bring something to keep my hand clean.
